For previous generations, it was common and expected that marijuana was illegal. Cannabis products were banned in almost all states.
But things have changed over time. Many states now offer medical THC programs. Some states near Indiana, such as Michigan and Illinois, even have recreational marijuana programs. Residents can simply buy cannabis products at a local dispensary, the same way you would buy a bottle of wine in Indiana.
However, despite these changes across the country, Indiana remains one of the very few states with absolutely no legal THC program on the books. As a result, residents are sometimes tempted to drive into Illinois or Michigan, buy the products there, and then drive home. But there are two reasons why this could lead to an arrest.
1. It is federally illegal
First of all, it’s federally illegal to cross state lines with marijuana products. If you do so, it falls under federal jurisdiction, as do other crimes involving interstate commerce. So you could face federal charges if you are discovered crossing the border.
2. It is locally illegal
On top of that, simply showing the officers that you purchased those products in Illinois or Michigan doesn’t mean you won’t face charges in Indiana. Those cannabis products, even if they were legal at the point of purchase, are still illegal once you’re back in the state. You could be arrested and find yourself facing the prospect of fines and even time behind bars, depending on the products and quantity you have.
If you are facing such serious legal charges, take the time to look into all of your defense options. A conviction could have a major impact on the rest of your life.
